The Beginning of the Bump

8/10/07

Okay, it’s official – I can no longer fit into my clothes. For all you women who have not yet had the pleasure, let me warn you: that’s a wonderful, self-esteem boosting realization (yeah, right). Anyway, Mom and I went maternity shopping today. She, of course, was quite looking forward to this event while I was a little more hesitant. A second warning: the first time you try on a pair of maternity pants with the horribly unfashionable front panel you will indeed feel like the ugliest, fattest person in the world. But then you realize…I can breathe! Maternity clothes may not be ultra attractive, but they are so comfortable! Elastic is my friend! This opinion may not hold true in a few months (and the elastic may not hold either) when I look like I’m walking around trying to hide a boulder under there, but for now it’s quite a relief. I also feel like once I get a little bit bigger, I can pretty much wear anything I want unapologetically because who is dumb enough to mess with a woman pregnant with twins?

For those out-of-towners or for those who haven’t seen me lately - The bump is not very big yet, but it’s big enough that one must at least ask oneself “Is she pregnant?” upon seeing me. Right, Wendy and Linda?

15 weeks

Johnny and I went to the doctor’s for a check-up today. The babies were moving all over the place and one looked like it was attempting to suck its thumb. The babies are lying sideways, one right above the other facing the same way, so it looks like they’re in double-decker hammocks. In some of the pictures the nurses/doctor were checking the bones and brain structure (Skeletor in picture 5 of the slideshow is a good example) , so you can see more than I ever really needed to see. Spinal cords, brain hemispheres, skeletal systems – I’m glad it’s all there but it’s kind of freaky to look at. Most importantly, perhaps, were the heartbeats which were good so everything seems to be going perfectly. Oh, and for those who know about John’s little “maybe there’s a third hiding in there” jokes, it was verified – there are definitely only (only?) two babies! Phew!

John has been very concerned that I haven’t been eating enough but I’ve gained 5 pounds since my last appointment, so that too is right where it should be (though I’m still not real happy about this whole weight gain thing). After John’s delightful little blog about the marshmallow/Twinkie craving I feel the need to set the story straight and let everyone know that was pretty much the only sweet craving I’ve had, and not because it was horrible because it actually wasn’t too bad. Well…there’s the occasional need for ice cream but if you know me you also know that has nothing to do with being pregnant. The main cravings have been for fruit (first watermelon and now apples), green beans, and occasionally waffles. Yum…I could go for an apple right now. Oooh, or green beans. Can you tell I’m hungry?

The not able to sleep thing has improved somewhat. It’s just not fair– when I was dead tired I couldn’t sleep. Now that I’m not so tired (which is most days, but not all) I can sleep at night. There’s something wrong with that picture.

Aren't pictures 1 and 4 cute? Look at their round little bellies!
